Next-Gen Switch Rumors Hint at Enhanced Power and Size

Next-Gen Switch Rumors Hint at Enhanced Power and Size

Alleged leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2 have been swirling around as Nintendo remains silent heading into 2025. Rumors about the console's reveal timing and design have been floating online, along with images of accessory manufacturers claiming to have products ready for the new hardware. A Redditor recently claimed to have seen a genuine Switch 2, and the latest information aligns with what we've been hearing: the Switch 2 is a bigger, better version of the console fans already love.

Exciting New Features

A user on the NintendoSwitch2 subreddit, named NextHandheld, claimed to have interacted with Nintendo's next device. They revealed that the new Joy-Con will feature Hall effect joysticks to prevent drift. The console will use a dock with higher power consumption and will be called the Nintendo Switch 2.

Instead of using a rail for attachment, the Joy-Con will reportedly use magnetic strips. The dock is rated for 60W, and the Switch 2 itself is rated for 45W, both significantly higher than the original model from 2017. The dock includes two USB-A ports and one USB-C port, similar to the current model.

A Familiar Design

Whether these details are entirely accurate or not, they align with previous leaks and CAD mockups of the Switch 2. The new console is expected to resemble the current Switch but slightly larger, with a more rounded profile and several spec upgrades to enhance handling and quality of life.

This approach isn't surprising when you consider the broader gaming hardware market. The Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 didn't drastically depart from their predecessors. Similarly, the Steam Deck 2 and most PC gaming handhelds maintain a consistent design, resembling a thick tablet with side controllers.

Nintendo's Unique Approach

What is surprising is Nintendo's decision to iterate on the existing Switch design, given its history of innovation. The company has often taken unique paths, like using cartridges longer than others and prioritizing motion controls with the Wii. The Switch itself used smartphone specs to enable portable gaming.

The idea of simply building on the existing Switch, already the second most popular gaming console ever, makes sense. However, it seemed too predictable for Nintendo. Yet, as we near the Switch 2's reveal, every leak suggests Nintendo is doubling down on what works.

Backwards Compatibility

The only confirmed detail about the new hardware is its backwards compatibility with existing Switch games. This reinforces the idea that Nintendo is sticking with a successful formula.

While Nintendo might still have surprises in store, we'll know for sure when they officially announce the console, promised before April 2025.
