The Station Access Controller: A Gamers’ Experience

The Station Access Controller is a unique gaming controller featuring a joystick on one side and a circle of configurable buttons on the other. This controller was showcased at a demonstration event in London back in October 5, 2023.

Here, I share my complex relationship with the game The Last of Us Part II. With its launch in 2020, I was part of a team dedicated to highlighting accessible innovations and disabled perspectives in the gaming industry. As the Mobility Editor of Can I Play That, I edited numerous features, news posts, and reviews focusing on what was widely regarded as the most accessible game release of the year. However, when it was my turn to write a review, I found that The Last of Us Part II wasn’t accessible for me, due to the lack of accessible hardware from PlayStation.

The Access Controller: A Beacon of Hope

Almost four years later, I now have the capability to boot up the remastered version of the game, thanks to Sony’s recently released Access Controller. However, it’s still challenging to fully immerse myself in the gaming world.

Access Controller: The Pros and Cons

As a person suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2, a condition that progressively weakens my muscles, I constantly require assistance in all aspects of life, including gaming. Before the Access Controller was launched in December 2023, I lost the ability to hold a standard console controller. Since 2018, I haven't been able to play a single PlayStation game, despite the growing number of accessibility tools available for disabled players.

Before discussing the pros and cons of the Access Controller, it's crucial to note that it's not comparable to Microsoft's Xbox Adaptive Controller, which was released in 2018. PlayStation's adaptive equipment is more similar to a traditional controller, while the Xbox Adaptive Controller allows users to create their own setup with varying buttons and switches. The choice of controller ultimately depends on the individual's needs.

My experience with the Access Controller has been a mix of joy and frustration. The software allows me to fully customize each input and set up three separate profiles, making it easy to switch between different game genres. However, the circular shape and size of the Access Controller pose significant barriers to my gaming experience.

The Last of Us Part II: The Most Accessible Game?

Booting up The Last of Us Part II or its remastered version for the first time can be overwhelming for a disabled individual. The game presents numerous accessibility options, each with their own specific preset. Depending on your situation, you might spend 15-30 minutes going through each feature to see if it's right for you.
