Fujibayashi and Aonuma on TotK's Crafting System
In a recent interview with Polygon, the director, Hidemaro Fujibayashi and the producer, Eiji Aonuma of Tears of the Kingdom were asked if TotK’s crafting system could be a standalone experience, similar to Super Mario Maker.
They explained that the game's impressive physics and the ability to combine nearly every in-game object to create tools and solve problems could be a good fit for such an experience. However, Aonuma clarified that such a concept wouldn't align with the team's vision of creative problem-solving in the game.
Aonuma's Perspective on Creativity in Gaming
Aonuma emphasized that while creating games like Tears of the Kingdom, it's crucial not to make creativity a requirement. Instead, the game should encourage players to be creative and give them the opportunity to do so without forcing them.
He believes that while there are players who enjoy creating from scratch, not everyone does. However, everyone delights in the discovery of finding their own way through a game. This is what they aimed to include in Tears of the Kingdom; there isn't one right way to play.
If you are a creative person, you have the ability to go down that path. But that's not what you have to do; you're also able to proceed with the game in many other different ways. Therefore, it wouldn't be a good fit for The Legend of Zelda to necessarily require people to build things from scratch and force them to be creative.
Opportunity to Be Creative in TotK
The "opportunity to be creative" is a key feature in TotK. The game is packed with puzzles and challenges that require creativity to solve. While some puzzles are initially cryptic enough to invite unconventional approaches, there's often a more direct path, one that wouldn't burden players with starting from scratch.
When it first arrived earlier this year, fans were often seen showing off their latest creation in Zelda. It was an impressive display of ingenuity and creative solutions.
