The Simpsons: Hit & Run - A Massive Success and a Missed Opportunity

Released in 2003, The Simpsons: Hit & Run was a grand success that sold millions of copies worldwide. The game, which featured the beloved characters from the popular animated series, was developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Vivendi.

Plans for a Sequel

With the game's immense popularity, a sequel featuring exciting new elements like planes was in the works. However, to everyone's surprise, the publisher passed on an attractive offer to create additional Hit & Run games.

What Could Have Been

In an enlightening video interview, six original developers and producers of Hit & Run shared fascinating insights about the game's inception and what the sequel could have offered. According to executive producer John Melchior, the sequel seemed like a "no-brainer" to everyone involved.

The Sequel That Never Was

While the original game only featured cars and trucks, the sequel had plans to introduce blimps, airships, and planes. The team had even started to work on a towing mechanic that would allow players to drag wagons and trailers behind cars.

A Missed Opportunity

Despite the promising prospects, the publisher, Vivendi, decided against the sequel. Melchior claimed that the five-game deal would have cost the publisher the same or less than what it paid for the Simpsons license for just Hit & Run. Unfortunately, this led to EA acquiring the license to produce its own Simpsons games.

Hope for a Remake?

Though a sequel seems unlikely now, the original creators expressed their desire for a remake. They even expressed admiration for a fan-made UE5 remake, suggesting that Disney (the current owner of Fox) should release it as is.

The Future of Hit & Run

However, a remake would require the involvement of both Disney and Activision (the holder of the original game code). So, while fans may be eager for a new Hit & Run game, it might be a long wait.
