Legendary Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet

Scarlet and Violet introduce Latias, Latios, and three other Pokémon for players to discover. These powerful creatures, with their histories woven into the game's world, add a new layer of excitement and intrigue.

Remember the thrill of finding and capturing a Legendary Pokémon? The encounter with Mewtwo in the original Pokémon Red and Blue is a prime example. Discovering this powerful creature in the Cerulean Cave was a significant endgame payoff, a testament to the game's rich backstory.

However, recent iterations of the series seem to be stretching their lore. They offer somewhat flimsy reasons for the availability of these god-like entities in subsequent games. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Indigo Disk DLC appears to be following this trend.

What's Coming Out in Pokémon: The Indigo Disk

The second DLC for Scarlet and Violet introduces Blueberry Quests. These quests involve luring Legendary Pokémon with treats in order to capture them. It may seem absurd to think that feeding Kyogre, the sea god, with TetraFin flakes would work, but it does. Blueberry Quests have been confirmed for almost every Legendary Pokémon not yet in the games through a previous update.

The Current State of Legendary Pokémon in Games

Such arrangements have become commonplace in recent Pokémon games. However, the in-game explanations for the existence of these gathering grounds for Legendary Pokémon are becoming less believable. Take the Max Lair in Sword and Shield for example, it's essentially a tourist attraction where trainers can find and capture Legendary Pokémon. For some inexplicable reason, many of the masters of the Pokémon universe's natural elements have decided to congregate in a cave system in the Galar region.

Similar setups can be found in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl with Ramanas Park. This facility offers designated rooms where players can place purchased slates to summon Legendary Pokémon. While these workarounds make sense from a gameplay perspective, the commodification of these encounters doesn't feel quite right compared to the world-altering events they used to represent.

Alternatives to the Current System

It doesn't always have to feel this commercialized. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire introduced Mirage Spots, an example of a more organic and less commercialized way of encountering Legendary Pokémon.
