The PlayStation 5 “slim” is set to arrive this month. A recent teardown video offers a sneak peek at what gamers can anticipate, from internal changes to the surprising fact that it doesn’t actually appear much smaller overall. This might be Sony’s most subtle yet peculiar redesign to date.

Exploring the New PS5 Model

Tech expert Dave Lee recently got his hands on the new PS5 model and provided a preview of how it looks compared to the original 2020 launch versions. His main observation is that the console, while lighter, doesn’t necessarily feel much smaller compared to initial predictions. Perhaps that’s why Sony isn’t officially marketing the new device as a “slim” version.

Internal Changes in the PS5 "Slim"

Lee highlighted some of the less apparent changes. Some of these include the USB-a slot on the front being replaced by two USB-c ports, as well as the side panels split into two pieces to accommodate the new detachable disc drive. The disc drive comes out easily and looks very simple and convenient. There are no screws involved. Instead, applying pressure on a tab releases it from the housing while a socket near the bottom is how it plugs into the rest of the console.

Design and Aesthetic Changes

Within the new PS5, Lee pointed out some differences. The top heat exhaust is less stylized, with plain vents instead of a snail shell-like spiral. The internal SSD unit layout is also different. It’s not yet clear if the new design will impact performance at all. Lee’s initial testing showed there was no significant difference.

Pricing and Release Date

The new PS5s will run $500 for the disc-drive unit and $450 for the all-digital version, with the option to upgrade to a disc drive later for an extra $70. Sony plans to release the new PS5 later in November.
