Back in September 2011, I was a college junior engrossed in playing Epic Games’ new third-person shooter, Gears of War 3. I pre-ordered this much-anticipated game, eager to get the gold Retro Lancer skin for my multiplayer battles.

The following year, my affection for Gears 3 grew, surpassing my love for the Halo franchise after the disappointment of Halo 4.

Shift in Gaming Preference

As with many multiplayer games that eventually lose their appeal, Gears 3 faded away. My attention shifted to Call of Duty releases, then to Overwatch 2, and the battle royales that emerged in the early fall.

Every now and then, I would reminisce about Gears of War 3, its unique camera angle, the satisfying gameplay, and the thrilling executions. Nothing else felt quite like Gears 3, not even its sequels.

Revisiting Gears of War 3

Recently, I succumbed to my nostalgia for Epic’s third-person shooter. I downloaded it via Xbox Game Pass and started playing it again.

Upon starting up Gears of War 3, I was greeted by the Xbox 360 online interface. It was like stepping back in time. The old pop-up notification appeared, informing me that I was online. My old profile picture was there, as well as information about the 360-era games I played.

The Gears 3 Experience

The familiar opening theme of Gears 3 brought back a flood of memories. I was transported back to my college years, waiting for my friends to join me online for a Team Deathmatch.

What surprised me most was that I could still play Gears 3 online. Despite the menu indicating “0 players online worldwide,” I was able to join a Team Deathmatch game in seconds.
