Introduction
The Budokai series has always been a love letter to the Dragon Ball universe. Now, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero aims to capture that magic for a new generation.
Spike and Bandai have put in a lot of effort, and we got the chance to spend several hours with this promising game.
First Impressions
The first thing we did was dive into the tutorial. It felt familiar for Budokai and Raging Blast fans. However, if you haven't played these games in a while, you may feel overwhelmed by the numerous options.
From moves to special attacks, defense, and combos, everything is here. After three hours, we started to get the hang of it.
Combat System
Dragon Ball Sparking Zero introduces new counters. There are many counters, each with a dedicated button. This adds a sense of power and strategy to the game.
- Power-ups and transformations consume action points.
- Special attacks and techniques are always available.
- Maxing out your Ki activates Sparking mode, making you unstoppable for a short time.
The combat system is robust, and we can't wait to dive deeper into it.
Visuals and Animation
Sparking Zero is stunning. The trailers do justice to the final game. Characters look their best, and animations are smooth and detailed.
From movement to special attacks, everything is a nod to the manga and anime. The aura effects are also beautiful.
Game Modes
Sparking Zero offers various modes. We tried the customized combat mode, which lets you set up unique battles with increasing difficulty.
One highlight was the Jiren Raid boss, a tough challenge that simulated Jiren's strength well. Additionally, the game features a scenario creation tool, allowing players to craft their own stories.
Episodes Mode
We also tested the Episodes mode. At launch, there will be eight episodes, each following a character's journey in the Dragon Ball universe.
For example, Goku's episode starts against Raditz. You can choose to fight with Krillin instead of Piccolo, creating new story branches.
These episodes offer alternate paths based on your choices during battles. The potential for "what if?" scenarios is exciting.
Classic Modes
Classic tournament and combat modes will be available, along with other features we couldn't test. There's also a mastery system where you rank up with frequently used characters, possibly unlocking special rewards.
