Sony's Future Plans and PlayStation 5's Lifecycle
The tech giant, Sony, recently shared its financial results for the third quarter of 2024. Unfortunately, the news wasn't all rosy for PlayStation enthusiasts. Sony revealed it has no plans to launch new games in its major series for the remainder of the year.

Sony executives also stated that the current-gen console, the PlayStation 5, is reaching the "latter phase" of its lifecycle. This suggests that the company is already looking ahead to the next generation of gaming.

According to financial reports, Sony anticipates a slowdown in PS5 sales in the upcoming fiscal year (April 2024 to March 2025). "PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle," said Sony SVP Naomi Matsuoka. Emphasis will be placed on balancing profitability and sales, which could lead to a decline in the annual sales rate of the PS5 hardware.
PS5 Availability and Sales
The PlayStation 5, which was launched in November 2020, was notoriously hard to get due to global supply chain issues. However, availability improved significantly in 2023, with Sony confirming that 54.7 million PS5 units have been sold since its launch. Despite these impressive numbers, it still lags behind Nintendo's Switch sales of 139 million units since 2017.
Next-Gen Already in Sony's Sights
Typically, game consoles have a lifespan of about seven years. However, the enduring popularity of the Nintendo Switch suggests that this isn't a hard and fast rule. The fact that Sony is already considering its next-gen console isn't surprising, but it does feel a bit premature given that the PS5 only became widely available at MSRP recently.
