Final Fantasy XVI Nears End of Support as Anniversary Approaches

Image: Square EnixThe much-anticipated one-year anniversary of Final Fantasy XVI is nearing. As it approaches, the game appears to be nearing the end of its support lifecycle.

The second and final piece of DLC for the game, The Rising Tide, is slated for an April release, and the PC port is in its final optimization stages. Many assumed that once these tasks are completed, the game would gradually fade away. However, Producer Naoki Yoshida has other plans in mind.

Game Expansion Beyond PC

Yoshida has hinted at the possibility of porting the game to platforms beyond PC. This means that fans may not have to say goodbye to FF16 just yet.

Final Fantasy XVI on Other Platforms?

While Yoshida did not specify what "other platforms" the team is considering for FF16, the game's technical requirements limit the choices. Xbox Series X|S seems to be a likely candidate for a port, especially considering Yoshida's work on Square Enix's RPG franchise has already made its way over to Xbox this year with the release of Final Fantasy 14 on the platform.

Possible Port to Unknown Console

There's also a possibility that FF16 could be ported to a console we don't know about yet. With ongoing rumors about the successor to the Nintendo Switch, there's a chance a port of FF16 could come to the console. However, rumored specs for the Switch 2 put it more in line with PS4 and Xbox One, so FF16 would still have to be heavily optimized for the platform.

Until Yoshida and the team share more details, Xbox and Nintendo gamers will have to stay hopeful. Meanwhile, PC players can look forward to experiencing the game soon, and PS5 players will be able to bid farewell to Clive and friends when The Rising Tide releases on April 18.
