The game has drawn attention due to AI allegations and comparisons to Pokémon, making it 2024's first gaming sensation. Impressively, Palworld has reportedly sold over seven million copies on Steam within the first five days of release.
Palworld: More Than Just "Pokémon with Guns"
Often referred to as "Pokémon with guns", Palworld offers players the chance to build structures and craft medicines for survival on the stunning yet brutal islands of Palpagos. Players capture and utilize the labor of creatures known as Pals, who can perform a variety of tasks from fighting to building. Despite its similarities to Nintendo's iconic game series, Palworld aligns more closely with Ark: Survival Evolved. Despite controversy over its character designs, the game's popularity has skyrocketed, even briefly surpassing Fortnite in popularity.
Palworld's Sales Figures
However, it's important to note that the reported sales figures are for Steam units only, as confirmed by The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley. These figures do not account for sales on Xbox consoles or downloads through Microsoft's subscription service, Xbox Game Pass. Nevertheless, with seven million copies sold on Steam, equating to approximately $189 million in sales, Palworld has managed to outperform Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: Battlegrounds in popularity.
Comparison with Nintendo's Sales Figures
While impressive, these sales figures still fall short when compared to Nintendo's monster collectors. In September 2023, Nintendo revealed that their 2019 Pokémon games, Sword and Shield, sold 26.02 million copies, while 2022's Scarlet and Violet sold 23.23 million units. This doesn't mean that Palworld can't surpass these games, but it certainly has a long road ahead.
