Game Tips: How to Defeat the Furnace Golems in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Burning golems are a common sight in Elden Ring's new DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. Here's how to take these fiery giants down.

The first thing you'll notice in the Realm of Shadow is a massive walking Wicker Man on fire and a village reduced to ash. It's safe to assume these two things are related.

Like most things in Elden Ring, if it's moving, it needs to die. But just walking up and trying to stick a sword in these guys is an easy way to end up extra crispy inside your own armor.

There's a bunch of these guys roaming the land, some blocking your way to the critical path. Knowing how to deal with them is essential.

Furnace Golem Abilities

The problems start when you're within a football field away from them. They can kick up a ton of flaming dirt, which can be a one-hit kill early on in the DLC.

Some spew fire from the basket on top of their heads, and those flames will follow you a bit. By the time you get to these guys, you should have a few Scadutree Fragments to survive the barrage.

There's also a rare attack where the Golem will breathe a heat attack at you that can travel a preposterous distance across the map.

Things get simpler up close, where they try to stomp on you. Each stomp creates a wave of fire across the ground. If they leap and stomp, it creates an explosion you can't jump over.

They can kneel down and try to grab you. If they catch you, they'll throw you in their head basket, and that's an instant kill. If you're in an elevated position, they'll try to punch you instead.

Some Tips for Beating Furnace Golems

These guys are often in wide open areas by themselves. If they aren't, they usually trample or burn any other enemies in the vicinity for you.

Take advantage of the space. You can summon Spirit Ashes once you're within a certain range of a Golem's stomping grounds. Spirit Ashes are more bait than anything else, but they can pull aggro and buy you a couple of minutes.

For the ones out in fields, make your approach on Torrent. Circle towards the Golem and boost speed when you see its leg rearing back to kick some dirt or when its head starts erupting.

Stay on Torrent for extra mobility and keep behind the Golem as much as possible. Get good with cornering; turning on a dime is crucial. The double jump is a game-changer since it makes the fight a lethal game of double dutch.

The real target is the bearded face at the front of its basket. It's a little high up, so target the Golem's legs first. You're trying to build up enough stagger to get the Golem to drop to one knee.

Work on one leg at a time. Use your strongest or longest sword, but timing is everything. Some of the best swords for crippling the Golem's stance lock you into a swing animation right when the Golem's about to stomp. Plan accordingly.

Once one leg staggers, start working on the other. When both legs have been staggered, the Golem will faceplant into the dirt. Ride up to its face and give it a riposte, which will knock off around half its health.

If you're fighting on uneven terrain and the riposte can't trigger, hit the face with your bigger attack. You can still do serious damage while it's grounded.

The Furnace Pot Solution

If the Furnace Golem has armor on its legs, take the high road. Armored Golems are always close to a rise of land that puts you above their heads.

Toss Fire or Furnace Pots into the Golem's head basket while dodging flame attacks and big swinging punches. Fire does the most damage to a thing that's already on fire—one of life's little mysteries.

Your reward is always a brand-new Crystal Tear and a Furnace Visage, which helps you craft another Furnace Pot to take down the next Golem.
