The End of Call of Duty's DMZ Mode

The much-debated fate of Call of Duty’s DMZ extraction mode has been decided. Amidst the rise of Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies as the top player-versus-environment (PvE) mode, DMZ has been confirmed to be coming to an end.

In a recent announcement, Activision confirmed the unfortunate news many fans had been dreading: DMZ will receive no updates and will be separate from the Modern Warfare 3/Warzone ecosystem with the launch of Season 1 of Modern Warfare III on December 6, 2023.

A Brief History of DMZ

DMZ was introduced as a beta within Warzone 2.0 on November 14, 2022. It was a unique open-world, narrative extraction mode where multiple players had to loot, survive, and escape in a high-stakes PvPvE scenario, akin to Escape From Tarkov.

Though it never reached the same level of popularity as Warzone, it captured the attention of many players and was one of the most enjoyed gaming experiences in 2022 and early 2023.

Activision's Announcement Regarding DMZ

Activision revealed that beginning with the launch of Season 1, DMZ Beta players can continue the mode via the Call of Duty: Warzone section of COD HQ. However, the mode will not be available or interact directly within Modern Warfare III or Call of Duty: Warzone. This means that progression and any new Modern Warfare III or Warzone content, including Battle Pass or store bundles, will not sync or carry back into this DMZ mode. In addition, DMZ progress will not apply to new Battle Passes beginning with Season 1.

Although players can still engage in the mode, there won’t be any future content updates and progress towards battle pass will not be recognized. The DMZ update concluded by stating that “development teams will continue to evolve these dynamic open world experiences into the future. We look forward to sharing updates when ready.” Streamers Visuals has reached out to Activision for comment.

DMZ’s Future

The discontinuation of DMZ is a disappointment for its dedicated fanbase who were hoping to see it evolve out of its beta status. The mode had its issues with difficulty balances and intrusive monetization practices, but many players saw these as part of the natural evolution of live-service games. Despite its challenges, it fostered a small but passionate community, especially on r/DMZ, which is currently mourning the mode's demise.

The end of DMZ is particularly impactful as there aren’t many accessible multiplayer extraction shooters out there. The genre offers a unique mix of competitive and cooperative game experience that isn’t fully satisfied by battle royal.
