Destiny 2 plans big updates as Bungie aims to win back players
Destiny 2 is gearing up for some major changes as Bungie fights to win back players.
What's Happening with Destiny 2?
The multiplayer FPS, published by Activision, is currently experiencing its lowest number of simultaneous players on Steam.
To combat this, Bungie is planning a complete overhaul of the game's economic model.
New Economic Model
This new plan includes:
- Two medium-sized expansions per year
- Four major free updates annually
Bungie stated that this evolution aims to improve the gaming experience through a multi-year update plan.
Upcoming Expansions
The first expansion, Codename Apollo, will launch in summer 2025 with a new non-linear story focused on characters.
This will be followed by another major update in the fall.
The second expansion, Codename Behemoth, will arrive in winter 2025.
Its second update is expected in spring 2026.
What to Expect
Each expansion will include:
- New stories
- New locations
- New missions
- New weapons
- New equipment
- New raids
- New dungeons
Challenges at Bungie
This announcement comes after a period of speculation and turmoil within the Destiny community.
Bungie, owned by Sony, recently laid off 220 employees.
Additionally, 155 more employees are expected to leave in the coming months.
This leaves the studio with a total of 850 employees.
Studio Director Pete Parsons stated, "It's sad for us, especially after the success of The Final Shape."
He added that economic realities forced them to make difficult decisions to keep the studio afloat.
Future of Destiny 2
Bloomberg reported that Bungie will no longer focus on large expansions for Destiny 2.
Instead, they will concentrate on smaller, free updates.
There are no plans for a potential Destiny 3, and a spin-off known as Payback has been canceled.
However, the development of the Marathon series revival is still ongoing.
