The much-anticipated arrival of the highly rated MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV to Xbox consoles is upon us. After over a decade of waiting, the Xbox Series X|S version is set to launch on Thursday, March 21. However, the excitement is somewhat tempered by a series of announcements from Square Enix about exclusive features and play requirements, including a new currency called FFXIV Coins.

The new currency was unveiled in a recent blog post on The Lodestone, the go-to site for all things FF14. This unique form of currency will be exclusive to Xbox players and will serve as the sole payment method for all FF14-related charges.

What does this mean for Xbox Players?

From subscription fees to in-game purchases, all transactions will require FFXIV Coins. The coins can be purchased from the Microsoft Store and credited to a player's Square Enix account upon logging into the game on Xbox. However, Square Enix has yet to disclose the real money to FFXIV Coins exchange rate.

How to Avoid Using FFXIV Coins

For those looking to bypass this system, regular payment methods can still be used by accessing the in-game Mog Station from a computer or mobile device. This does add an extra step to the purchasing process but offers an alternative to using FFXIV Coins.

Other Challenges for Xbox Players

This coin system is not the only hurdle that Xbox players will face. Earlier this year, Square Enix disclosed that a Game Pass subscription would be required to play FF14 on Xbox, in addition to the regular game subscription. This has caused some discontent, as PlayStation and PC players only need a game subscription to enjoy FF14.

On a brighter note, those with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription can download the Online Starter Edition of FF14 for free until April 19. This free trial version of the game includes the Stormblood expansion.
