Picture a DualSense controller perfectly balanced atop a PS5, a symbol of a gaming journey that has come full circle. I began as a console gamer, transitioned to PC gaming, and am now finding myself drawn back to the console world.

The Allure of PC Gaming

My transition to PC gaming was spontaneous and transformative. In 2016, I bought a Steam Machine, Valve's initial attempt to combine the Steam platform with a console-like experience. This purchase introduced me to the vast library of Steam and the enhanced performance that surpassed my PS4. I was captivated.

Soon, I found myself investing in a Dell PC and eventually building my own computer. I sold my Xbox One and most of my PS4 collection, retaining my PS4 only for the anticipated release of Final Fantasy VII Remake. From then on, my gaming world revolved around my PC. The games ran smoother, and there were more of them. Why would I settle for anything less?

Re-evaluating Gaming Priorities

As we approach 2024, I am rethinking my gaming strategy. It might be time to shift some of my gaming from my Windows machines back to my PS5, Switch, Steam Deck, and other consoles. This change is not about exclusive titles or the convenience of couch gaming. It's about a desire for a more focused, immersive gaming experience.

Inspiration from an Unexpected Source

The catalyst for this decision came from an unexpected place - the Moog Grandmother synthesizer. As a musician, I had embraced computers and digital audio workstations for their endless musical possibilities. But in doing so, I lost the experience of spending focused time with a musical instrument. I want to bring that focus back into my gaming experience.

Returning to the Basics

Swapping a PC for a console might seem like merely trading one screen for another. But the more I play on my PS5, the more I appreciate the benefits of a more isolated, focused gaming experience. This is the type of gaming I enjoyed for most of my life, even if a game could technically run better on my PC.

In the world of gaming, we're often bombarded with demands for "bigger, better, faster now." Framerates of 120hz, resolutions of at least 1440p, and constant content creation are the expected norms.
