PlayStation Studios Face Downsizing

In October, Naughty Dog, another PlayStation studio, released several of its contractors from various departments, including art, production, and quality assurance. This trend of downsizing has been prevalent in the gaming industry, with big names like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two, and Embracer laying off hundreds of employees, consolidating teams, or even shutting down entire studios. Microsoft, a rival of PlayStation, has also implemented significant cuts at its first-party Halo studio, 343 Industries, at the start of 2023.

Bungie's Acquisition by Sony

In the midst of a wave of acquisitions across the gaming industry, Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion last year. Besides the popular sci-fi MMO shooter Destiny 2, Bungie is also developing the extraction shooter Marathon and another original IP. There had been reports of Bungie's involvement in an internal evaluation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us 2 multiplayer spin-off, which subsequently halted the project. While not officially cancelled, the game appears to be on hold for the time being.

Official Responses Awaited

Both Sony and Bungie have not yet responded to requests for comments. The CEO of Bungie, Pete Parsons, referred to the day of the layoffs as a "sad day" on Twitter. He expressed gratitude for the contributions of the departed staff to Bungie's games and culture.
