The Supreme Court of Korea recently passed a judgement that a South Korean man is to serve one year and six months in prison. The crime? Refusal to participate in the country's mandatory military service. His argument was that he is a conscientious objector, but this was dismissed by a lower court partially due to his fondness for the game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

The Impact of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Released in 2017, PUBG was one of the pioneering and most popular battle royale shooters. It holds the record for most concurrent players on Steam at over 3 million. Despite other games like Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone taking over the top spot, PUBG continues to be a favorite among gamers, including the aforementioned South Korean man.

The Case in Detail

In November 2018, the man was charged with violating the nation’s Military Service Act. This law mandates all able-bodied men in the country to serve in the military for at least 18 months. The man initially told the court he refused to enlist because of his personal beliefs against war.

However, the court was skeptical about his claims, especially given his love for PUBG. The defendant admitted to frequently playing the game, which involves killing characters with guns in a virtual reality. This led the court to question the authenticity of his conscientious objection.

On February 4, the Supreme Court upheld the previous verdict. The man will now be forced to serve 18 months in prison, which is the same duration he would have served in the military.
