Zombie Fungi Found in Scotland No Threat Like The Last of Us

In a fascinating turn of events, a rare type of fungus reminiscent of the infamous Cordyceps from the blockbuster game The Last of Us has been discovered in Scotland. This discovery has sparked intrigue among gamers and scientists alike. In the game, humanity faces devastation from a brain infection caused by a parasitic fungus that turns humans into terrifying zombie-like creatures. While this might sound like pure fiction, the recent findings in Scotland have brought a touch of reality to this fictional narrative.

The Real-Life Zombie Fungus

The newly discovered fungus, known as Gibellula, infects spiders through fungal spores. It grows inside the spider, eventually taking over the entire insect. This process is eerily similar to the infection in The Last of Us, where humans are transformed into zombie-like beings.

Just like in the game, the infected spiders are manipulated to move under leaves, where they are left to die. This strategic positioning helps the spores to spread more efficiently once the spider decomposes.

Natural Phenomenon or Cause for Concern?

Although the discovery of Gibellula in Scotland is rare, it is not the first time it has been spotted. Over the past 70 years, it has been reported only ten times in the region. Ben Mitchell, an amateur naturalist involved in a habitat restoration project, made this recent discovery.

Mitchell noted, "It's a bit creepy, but it's a remarkable natural phenomenon." The idea of a fungus controlling its host is fascinating yet unsettling, especially for fans of The Last of Us.

Could Fiction Become Reality?

Since the release of The Last of Us on PlayStation and its subsequent TV adaptation, the real-world Cordyceps has been under scientific scrutiny. Some wonder if the future imagined by Neil Druckmann could become a reality.

While the parasitic fungus is studied extensively and even found in dietary supplements, there's no need to panic. As of now, these "zombie fungi" have not evolved to control human minds.
