Diablo 4 Update: Hireable Allies Join the Fray

How to Obtain Mercenaries
Mercenaries are unlocked as you progress through the expansion's storyline. Raheir, the leader of the Pale Hand, will automatically join you after a few missions. To find other Mercenaries, complete the initial branches of the "Deeds Of A Champion" quest. These quests, such as "A Nameless Mystery," "Slayer's Retribution," and "A Feather On The Scale," are available once you reach the hub area.

Using Mercenaries
Once unlocked, you can have two Mercenaries with you: one as a Hired companion and another as Reinforcement. The Hired Mercenary stays with you at all times, providing consistent support. Reinforcements are more situational, using their abilities based on conditions you set.
To maximize their effectiveness, choose abilities from their skill trees and decide when they should activate. Options include using a skill when you're injured or when you lose control of your character.
Understanding Rapport
Rapport is a reputation system for Mercenaries. As you fight alongside a Hired Mercenary, they gain Rapport, which leads to Ranks and additional Skill points in their Talent Tree. Enlisted Reinforcements gain Rapport at half the rate of Hired Mercenaries.

Raheir is a defensive powerhouse, using a shield to protect you. His abilities are great for players needing extra survivability. If you're playing a class with low defense, hiring Raheir is a smart choice.
Aldkin
