In the 2023 Q3 earnings call of Warner Bros Games, David Zaslav, the CEO of WB Discover, elaborated on the company's future plans. He stated that the publisher, known for games such as Batman: Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad, will focus more on developing always-online, free-to-play, live-service games.

The Future of WB Games
WB Games has been quite successful in recent years with big hits like Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 1, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. However, its DC Comics live-service co-op action game, Gotham Knights, didn't perform as expected. The company's upcoming online co-op game set in the DC universe, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, has also experienced several delays, and some of its features have not been well received by fans. Despite these setbacks, WB Games plans to develop more games similar to Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad.

He identified WB Games' library of popular franchises as a "growth opportunity" and a significant asset. However, he also indicated that the company would no longer focus on single-player games like Arkham City.
Zaslav outlined the company's new strategy, stating, "Our focus is on transforming our biggest franchises from largely console and PC based with three-four year release schedules to include more always on gameplay through live services, multiplatform and free-to-play extensions. The goal is to have more players spending more time on more platforms."

Zaslav believes that creating more live-service, always-online video games will increase engagement and monetization. He emphasized that such games offer a significant opportunity to generate more revenue after purchase.
However, this strategy may not be well-received by fans. The high cost of in-game items in games like Mortal Kombat 1 has already led to some criticism. Furthermore, Zaslav's past decisions have also been controversial, suggesting that he may not be particularly concerned about potential backlash from fans.
