Alert: You Need More Downtime in Baldur's Gate 3.

The Art of Resting in Baldur's Gate 3

Picture this: Shep, our hero, taking a well-deserved break at camp. Who can resist the allure of a good nap? Especially in the world of Baldur's Gate 3, where you spend your time engaged in battles, using your precious spell slots, and surviving brutal hits that nearly cost your life. All this can be mitigated by taking a rest at camp. Maybe you're like a child refusing to sleep, caught up in the excitement of the game, reluctant to rest at your campfire because there is so much to do. But here's a piece of advice: resting isn't just vital to heal your party and replenish your spell slots. By not taking time to rest, you're missing out on some of the best moments that Baldur's Gate 3 offers.

What's the difference between a short rest and a long rest?

In Baldur's Gate 3, you have two types of "rests" at your disposal. A Short Rest can be taken anywhere in the overworld and partially heals your team. However, it does not replenish spell slots unless you're a class like Warlock that has fewer spell slots but can regain them during a short rest. You're allowed two Short Rests each day, which are restored by taking a Long Rest. They're handy to give your team a second wind in a lengthy dungeon or a quick heal before a fight.

On the other hand, a Long Rest is the reset you'd need at the end of the day before venturing into a massive dungeon or encounter. These rests are taken by setting up camp and using the food and drink you've collected during your travels. Each food item has a Camp Supply point value, and you need to reach level 40 for a Long Rest to be effective. Anything lower, and you'll get a Partial Rest, which has similar effects to a Short Rest.

Why bother resting if my party isn’t dying?

The camp is where much of the personal drama in Baldur's Gate 3 unfolds. It's the place where you'll cultivate relationships with your party members and observe the development of their friendships or rivalries. Sadly, failing to set up camp can result in missing several scenes, especially early in the game. Even if it doesn't impact your romantic prospects, it can be disappointing to realize you've skipped a scene you remember from a previous playthrough.

It's always a good idea to return to camp to check-in with your party. Some scenes only occur when you rest, like the ones with the Guardian. It doesn't have to be a Long Rest, so if you're keen on seeing more of the story but don't have a lot of food, don't fret about missing stuff based on that alone. But do make an effort to rest at camp as much as possible, because you might miss out on some of the best aspects of Baldur's Gate 3 otherwise.
