Though Final Fantasy XVI didn't make the cut for Game of the Year at the 2023 Game Awards, it did receive recognition in the Best Role-Playing Game, Narrative, Music, and Performance categories. Despite not clinching the top prize, it did secure two new DLC expansions.

Final Fantasy XVI: Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide
Echoes of the Fallen is the first of two planned DLCs for Final Fantasy XVI. The second DLC, The Rising Tide, is set to be released in spring 2024 and will feature Leviathan, the long lost summon missing from the game’s main campaign. Both DLCs are set before the end of the game and will introduce new allies, monsters, and areas to explore.

Final Fantasy XVI Storyline
Final Fantasy XVI follows the journey of Clive Rosfield, a noble-turned-slave who joins a resistance movement led by the charismatic Cid. The aim is to liberate the world’s oppressed class of "Bearers"—those with innate magical abilities—from servitude. However, there are a few unresolved mysteries in the narrative, including several references to the sea serpent Leviathan, a common summon in earlier Final Fantasy games. Fans hoping for Leviathan's appearance in future DLC will not be disappointed.
Reception of Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy XVI received mixed reviews at launch. Some praised its visual beauty, thrilling battles, voice acting, and soulful characters like protagonist Clive and memorable supporting character Cid.
