Final Fantasy XIV Live-Action Series: What Happened?
First announced in 2019, the FFXIV show was being developed by Square Enix, Sony Pictures Television, and production company Hivemind Entertainment. It was planned to be a live-action series that would explore the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict. However, after years of silence, this ambitious project has been cancelled.
Why Was the Series Cancelled?
According to Hivemind’s co-founder, the series was rejected across the board due to its size and scale. Covid-19 also played a role in the cancellation of the series. Sadly, even an animated series seems unlikely as the rights are now back in Japan.
Reflections on the Cancelled Final Fantasy XIV Series
With the successful adaptations of Last of Us, Witcher, and Arcane, one can't help but wonder if the FFXIV series would have survived if it were produced today. However, considering some of the live-action video game adaptations we’ve gotten over the last decade, perhaps it's best that this series was cancelled.
