Leap Day Bug Halts Gaming on Theatrhythm Final Bar Line

Players eager to enjoy Theatrhythm Final Bar Line—a rhythm game with a Final Fantasy theme—found themselves stuck on February 29, Leap Day. A bug prevented the game from connecting to servers, mirroring a similar issue that occurred in an EA racing game. This forced players to alter the date on their consoles to continue playing.

Few are aware that today—Thursday, February 29—is a Leap Day. This extra day of the year occurs almost every four years. While Leap Days are typically uneventful, they can cause glitches in computers and software if not properly accounted for by developers or programmers. This Leap Year was no exception, with gas pumps in New Zealand failing and certain phone apps crashing. Even video games that require server connection faced issues.

A user on the Theatrhythm subreddit initially questioned whether their save file was corrupted as the game was not starting up correctly. They later updated their post, stating that they had resolved the issue by changing their console's date.

The user wrote, “A solution has been found. For some reason, the game cannot function on February 29th, presumably due to leap years. It'll black screen indefinitely until you change the clock back to the 28th, or any date after the 29th. Once the date is changed, the game will run perfectly fine again.”

Other PS4 and Switch players confirmed the bug and the effectiveness of the solution. Although the game wasn’t completely broken and could be played offline, it was an inconvenient situation that could have been avoided by Square Enix.

EA's WRC, a rally racing game developed by Codemasters, also suffered from a Leap Day bug. Players on both Xbox and PlayStation reported game crashes upon start-up. This issue was confirmed by the official EA support account on Twitter, which suggested changing the console clock to bypass the extra day.

While some may find these issues amusing, the increasing reliance on internet connection for games and services could make such bugs more problematic in the future. It would be unfortunate if something as simple as forgetting to account for February 29 could lead to widespread issues.
