Jonathan Nolan's New Vision for Amazon's Fallout TV Show

Prime VideoJonathan Nolan, the executive producer for the highly anticipated Fallout TV show on Amazon, has high hopes for the series. He believes that the show will not only live up to the high standards set by the games but also serves as a continuation or even a sequel to them.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Nolan expressed his excitement for the project, stating it’s “almost like we’re Fallout 5.” Such a statement sets a high bar for the upcoming series, which is set to release on April 12.

Another key player in the Fallout universe, Todd Howard, is also contributing to this canonical entry. However, fans shouldn't expect all of their favourite locations and characters to appear in the series. Howard emphasized that the series is an original story, and the creative team has been given full freedom to invent something new.

As Nolan puts it, “each of the games is a discrete story—different city, distinct protagonist—within the same mythology. Our series sits in relation to the games as the games sit in relation to each other.”

Nolan views the Fallout universe as an anthology of stories that tackle the same themes, rather than direct sequels. He expands on this idea by comparing it to his work on the Dark Knight trilogy of movies, directed by his brother Christopher Nolan, saying that Fallout, like Batman, has “no canonical version of it, so you’re free to invent your own.”

The Pressure of Adapting Video Games to TV Series

Co-showrunner Graham Wagner discussed the new challenges the Fallout series faces after the success of HBO’s The Last of Us, which demonstrated that good video game adaptations are possible. “In a perverse way, I wish there was more snobbery so that we could have been the first!” he shared with Total Film.

The series, which features Ella Purnnell (Yellowjackets), Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones), and Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), is set to air on Prime Video on April 12.
