Helldivers 2, a sci-fi third-person shooter, has become one of the biggest and best games of 2024. Over the past fortnight, the game's popularity has skyrocketed due to its hard but satisfying combat, intense action, and humorous, satirical tone.

However, it has been observed that some players, instead of enjoying the game, have decided to farm and optimize it, spoiling the gaming experience for others.

Helldivers 2 has provided some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences so far. The thrill of scraping by after completing a few objectives, pulling off a heroic last stand to escape the hostile planet and its adversaries, is exhilarating. The changing galactic war map after our heroic and sometimes not-so-heroic moments is immensely rewarding.

Even the challenge of carrying a random low-level player doesn't bother me. They are a loyal defender of democracy and I am more than willing to stand with them to save the galaxy, one bomb at a time.

What's Ruining the Game?

Recently, I noticed two low-level players bail after the first part of a larger campaign. This has happened more than once. As more players get into Helldivers 2, stories have emerged of players being killed for their samples or kicked out because they weren't using a build that a YouTuber or Redditor created.

Looking around online, this seems to be a widespread problem. Many players seem to be hell-bent on stripping all the uniqueness out of Helldivers 2 as they farm and optimize the game. It's time we stop this and enjoy the game as it was meant to be played.

Don't Farm the Fun Out of Helldivers

There are numerous videos on YouTube showing players how to grind out medals used to unlock new gear in the game. The problem is that the players who stick around to finish the campaign are left short-handed, which could be a significant problem depending on the difficulty and other missions involved.

What frustrates me about all this farming and grinding is that it doesn't make the game any more enjoyable. In fact, it takes away from the unique experience that Helldivers 2 has to offer.

So, let's not turn this cool game into a boring grind. Let's enjoy it for what it is and have a good time.
