Guiding You Through Baldur's Gate 3: An Unconventional Approach to Merchants

Witness our in-game characters Lae'zel, Shep, and Gale as they engage in conversation with an eager gentleman. This interaction, caught on screenshot, is a common scene in the world of Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios.

Ever found yourself without enough gold to buy that coveted item from a merchant in Baldur’s Gate 3? You could, of course, send your ragtag group off on quests to gain some coin. But we propose an alternative method. Have you ever thought of larceny as an option? Or better still, have you considered eliminating the risk of pickpocketing altogether and taking nearly everything a merchant owns? Allow us to introduce you to the concept of Knocking a Merchant Out and Taking Their Wares.

Non-lethal Attacks in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a feature that allows for non-lethal attacks. If your character is charisma-based, you may not have had to engage with this feature, as you can usually charm your way out of a confrontation. But did you know that you can use these non-lethal methods on anyone? All it takes is a few clicks and button presses, and you can swap out a lethal blow for a light tap on the head, leaving your target unconscious.

However, be warned that if you're seen by anyone other than the trader, you'll start a fight. So ensure you create some visual barriers between you, the merchant, and any possible witnesses. Remember, once you've done this, that particular merchant will no longer trade with you. Therefore, it's best to use this method with those in non-hub areas you don't plan on visiting frequently.

How to Knock Out a Merchant and Steal Their Wares

To execute this strategy, navigate to your Passives section in the command menu. Here, you'll find an option labeled "Toggle Non-Lethal Attacks." This option only works if you're unarmed or using a melee weapon, so archers and spellcasters will need to adjust their equipment. After that, it's as simple as using melee attacks until your target is knocked unconscious. You can then loot their unconscious body for that armor set or weapon you had your eyes on.

Why Not Just Kill the Trader?

If you're going to such lengths to shoplift, why not just kill the trader? Well, firstly, that's morally wrong, and unless you're playing a Dark Urge character, you should reserve your sword strikes and spells for more significant enemies. Additionally, looting a dead body offers fewer items. While testing this method, we found that unconscious traders had more loot than dead ones. However, some players claim to have had access to a trader's entire stock when they're unconscious. So, while your experience may vary, one thing is clear: you'll definitely get more loot from an unconscious merchant than a dead one.
