Exploring the Best Games of 2023
Throughout 2023, I made it my mission to explore some of the best new games each month, attempting to play as many as I could. I also tracked how my feelings towards these games evolved over the year. However, despite my best efforts, I didn't get around to playing some games that would have been strong GOTY contenders.
Deciding on the Best Games
With a not-so-short list assembled by early December, I had to decide which games I thought were the best. This process is more art than science. I would tally up the perceived merits and flaws of a game and then try to compare the vague calculations. This always ended in a mix of conflicted self-doubt and second-guessing.
Embracing Subjectivity
Eventually, I would silence the internal dissent and retreat into a more abstract sense of what feels right. This has meant giving in more to my personal tastes and subjectivity, championing the games I love rather than the ones I feel I ought to like. This doesn't impose any more order on the chaos of comparing different types of games, but it does lessen the guilt when I rate one above the other.
