Anticipating the Release of Fantasy XIV's Dawntrail Expansion

The upcoming expansion for the popular game, Fantasy XIV, titled Dawntrail, is set for release on June 28. This is specifically for those who seize the opportunity to pre-order. As a devoted player, I can hardly contain my excitement. However, there's a small issue — I'm yet to complete the last expansion, Endwalker.

Yes, I'm aware Endwalker was released in late 2021. Unfortunately, time has not been on my side and I found myself falling behind mid-expansion. As of today, April 3, I have a challenging 85 days to finish Endwalker and its patches. To facilitate this, I've decided to switch my gaming platform from PC to PS5.

Why I'm Switching from PC to PS5 for Fantasy XIV

I've been a dedicated player of Fantasy XIV on PC for the past four years. The reason being, it's an MMO. The sheer volume of actions and movements required during large-scale dungeons or raids seems specifically designed for a keyboard and mouse. However, I've found that my PC has become a hurdle in my quest to complete Endwalker. I no longer enjoy sitting at my desk for hours on end, hence, the switch to PS5.

Addressing the Challenges of the MMO Quest Design

The main issue lies in Fantasy XIV's quest design. As an MMO, the majority of the game's main scenario quests can be quite mundane. There are indeed some spectacular combat encounters in Endwalker, but they're spread out across 108 quests. The bulk of these quests involve sending your character from one point of the map to another, sometimes to defeat an enemy or two, collect items, or just to interact with other characters.

Switching to a Different Method of Input

Despite my initial resistance to playing with a controller, the prospect of comfortably lounging on my couch while gaming was too enticing to resist. However, this change wasn't without its challenges. Similar to switching jobs in the game, transitioning to a different method of input, in this case, a DualSense controller, meant having to relearn everything.

My first day with the PS5 version was primarily spent on adjusting settings and setting up my cross hotbars. Despite the steep learning curve, the transition has been surprisingly smooth and enjoyable.
