After spending more than a month reflecting on the ending of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, my feelings have only soured. It's puzzling how Square Enix decided to conclude the middle part of its planned Remake trilogy. The eleventh hour of Rebirth seems non-committal, and while I understand this isn't the finale, it feels less like a springboard for a new conclusion and more like a missed opportunity for a bold cliffhanger.

However, in my view, Rebirth's shortcomings stem less from its exposition and more from a seemingly vague and thematically derailed conclusion. Whispers, ghost-like entities, maintain individual continuities, but Rebirth suggests they can be influenced by characters like Sephiroth. This marks a shift in the Remake trilogy’s themes. Is Rebirth truly expanding upon its own ideas, or is it simply doing a complete thematic pivot, choosing the spectacle of the multiverse over an introspective examination of predeterminism?

Rebirth's Ending: A Wrestling Bout with Confidence

That's the question I grapple with. The ending of Rebirth doesn't inspire certainty that the narrative isn't being constructed on the fly. This inconsistency in theme is what makes Rebirth's ending suspect and ultimately a massive letdown to me.
