Apex Legends Tournament Abruptly Ends Due to Hacking Incident
A significant Apex Legends tournament recently concluded unexpectedly when several professional players were hacked mid-match. Apex Legends Global Series: A Massive Competition
The Apex Legends Global Series is an enormous contest for Respawn’s first-person battle royale that began in 2019. The tournament this year was one of the largest in ALGS history, boasting a $3 million prize pool and participation from over 60 countries and regions. However, the event came to a sudden stop during the March 13 weekend when pro players, Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose and Phillip “ImperialHal” Dosen, were hacked during the North American finals.
The Unforeseen Hacking Incident
In a peculiar turn of events, the hacks did not cause the game to crash or kill the players instantly. Instead, they provided the players with unique advantages. Genburten was granted a wallhack, a cheat that makes in-game walls transparent, allowing him to see every player on the battlefield. On the other hand, ImperialHal found himself with an aimbot, providing him with pixel-perfect accuracy when shooting his in-game weapon.
Mystery Surrounds the Tournament Disruption
The identity of the individual or group that disrupted the tournament remains unknown. However, footage of Genburten being hacked revealed the message “Apex hacking global series by Destroyer2009 and R4ndom” on the screen. Destroyer2009 is a known cheater who has been causing chaos in Apex Legends recently.
EA and Respawn Entertainment Yet to Comment
While EA and Respawn Entertainment have not yet commented on this unfortunate series of events, the Apex Legends Esports Twitter account announced on March 17 that the North American finals were postponed due to compromised competitive integrity. The Anti-Cheat Police Department (ACPD), a group that collects cheat and hack information in online games, advised players to take immediate measures to protect their personal information, including changing Discord passwords, securing email addresses, enabling multi-factor authentication, and performing a clean OS reinstall as soon as possible.
ACPD's Statement on the Breach
The ACPD mentioned that a remote code execution (RCE) exploit was used to inject cheats into streamers’ machines, potentially allowing hackers to install ransomware software to lock up PCs. However, the Easy Anti-Cheat Twitter account contradicted this statement, declaring that no RCE exploit was used by the hackers after conducting an investigation.
Final Thoughts
Regardless of whether an RCE exploit was used or not, the incident has been a disappointment for all involved.
