The initial news of McCaffrey’s passing was announced on Instagram by actor Kevin Dillon (Blue Bloods, Entourage, Poseidon), who shared a heartfelt message alongside a picture of the two.
Shortly after, the news of McCaffrey's passing was confirmed. It was reported that McCaffrey passed away surrounded by friends and family, following a battle with multiple myeloma, a rare cancer that begins in the bone marrow.

In his most recent role, McCaffrey starred in Alan Wake II as Alex Casey, a detective character reminiscent of Max Payne. McCaffrey also voiced the character of Zachariah Trench in Remedy’s Control. However, many in the gaming community will remember him for his unforgettable performance as the troubled former detective Max Payne in all three games.
