Shortly after, the news of McCaffrey's passing was confirmed. It was reported that McCaffrey passed away surrounded by friends and family, following a battle with multiple myeloma, a rare cancer that begins in the bone marrow.

In his most recent role, McCaffrey starred in Alan Wake II as Alex Casey, a detective character reminiscent of Max Payne. McCaffrey also voiced the character of Zachariah Trench in Remedy’s Control.
