Overwatch 2 Surprises Fans with Early Return of 6v6 Mode

Overwatch 2 Surprises Fans with Early Return of 6v6 Mode

Overwatch 2 is gearing up for an exciting change that fans of the original game will love. Blizzard has announced plans to test a return to the classic 6v6 format. This comes after the controversial switch to a 5v5 structure with the launch of Overwatch 2 in 2022. The test is happening sooner than expected, with the first phase kicking off in the next season. If you've been missing the old days of Overwatch, this might be the news you've been waiting for!

What's Changing in Overwatch 2?

Blizzard is set to hold two test periods to bring back the 6v6 format. The first test will start a week into the new season, beginning on December 10. This test won't be a direct return to the original 2-2-2 role spread. Instead, teams must have at least one hero of each role but no more than three per team composition.

  • One tank
  • One DPS
  • One support

This setup ensures a balanced team with at least one healer and one tank, preventing teams from stacking damage heroes.

Mid-Season Changes

The second test will occur midway through the season. It will incorporate new elements from Overwatch 2, such as hero reworks and reduced crowd control abilities. Blizzard hopes to fine-tune these changes to enhance gameplay.

Additionally, Blizzard plans to test a variation of the current 5v5 format. This will limit teams to two heroes per role, allowing for two tanks again. However, these tanks will have nerfs similar to the open queue format, balancing their power. A new midseason mode, codenamed Kingmaker, will reward players who are the sole person in a role with a bonus.

What's Next for Overwatch 2?

Blizzard will closely monitor player reactions to these tests. There's a possibility that both 5v5 and 6v6 formats could coexist in the game. This could offer players the best of both worlds, although it presents a challenge for a team that's faced significant cuts in the past year.

For fans of the original Overwatch, this could be a dream come true. However, some players remain skeptical, given the game's recent history. The return of familiar gameplay might be just what the community needs to reignite their passion for Overwatch 2. We'll find out when Season 14 kicks off in December.
