Sonic 3: Uncovering Its Hidden Inspirations
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now in theaters, and it's heavily inspired by the classic game Sonic Adventure 2. This 2001 Dreamcast game introduced Shadow the Hedgehog and took the Sonic universe into darker themes. While the movie isn't a direct retelling, it makes significant changes to the original storyline. Rouge the Bat

Maria's Illness
In the games, Maria Robotnik's terminal illness drives Gerald's quest for immortality. However, in Sonic 3, Maria is healthy, removing the need for this plot point.
Maria's Death
Maria's tragic end is altered in the movie. Instead of being shot, an interrupted GUN agent leads to an explosion that results in her death.
Gerald Robotnik Is Alive
Unlike the games, where Gerald is long dead, the movie keeps him alive. He manipulates Shadow and his grandson, dying at the end in a different way than in the game.
How Shadow Turns Against Gerald
Amy Rose, a key figure in the games, is absent. Instead, Sonic helps Shadow remember his true memories of Maria, leading to his transformation from villain to hero.
The Moon
In Sonic Adventure 2, the Eclipse Cannon destroys part of the moon. In Sonic 3, the heroes redirect its aim, leaving a severed section in orbit.
The Final Battle
Sonic and Shadow team up to save the world, similar to the game. However, they face an army of Gerald's robots instead of The Biolizard, which is not mentioned in the movie.
The Death of Eggman
After diverting the Eclipse Cannon, the facility self-destructs. Eggman and Shadow sacrifice themselves, with Shadow presumed dead, echoing Sonic Adventure 2. If Eggman's truly gone, it's a significant deviation from the source material.
