Cities Skylines 2 Devs Address Latest Challenges

Paradox Interactive, known for its complex strategy games like Europa Universalis IV and Crusader Kings III, has been facing some challenges lately. The company has made several missteps, leading to a wave of apologies from its executives. They promise a renewed focus on their beloved niche strategy games. Let's dive into the recent events surrounding Paradox Interactive and what the future holds for this gaming giant.

Cities: Skylines 2 Launch Issues

In 2023, Cities: Skylines 2 launched on Steam, but it felt more like an Early Access game. It had fewer features than its predecessor and was plagued with bugs. The game's Xbox Series X/S and PS5 ports were indefinitely delayed due to these issues.

Paradox's deputy CEO, Mattias Lilja, admitted that the negative response was partly due to poor hardware optimization. He acknowledged the mistake of launching too early and emphasized the need for better testing.

Prison Architect 2 Delays

Prison Architect 2, a sequel to the popular prison management game, has also faced delays. The game was supposed to move to a 3D environment but encountered technical challenges. Despite these setbacks, Paradox assures fans that the game will eventually be released.

Henrik Fhraeus, Paradox's chief creative officer, highlighted the importance of polishing the game to make a strong first impression.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

Bloodlines 2 has been another troubled project for Paradox. Initially developed by Hardsuit Labs, the project was handed over to The Chinese Room in 2021. Despite the long development time, Paradox remains committed to releasing the game by the first half of 2025.

Lilja mentioned that if Bloodlines 2 is successful, any potential sequel would likely be developed by another studio.

Life By You Cancellation

Life By You was Paradox's attempt to compete with The Sims 4. However, the game was canceled just before its Early Access launch due to quality concerns. Despite meeting internal goals, the game wasn't deemed good enough to compete with The Sims 4.

Fhraeus explained that Paradox plans to cancel more projects early on to avoid similar situations and focus on their core strengths.

The Path Forward for Paradox

Paradox aims to return to its roots by 2025 or 2026, focusing on its core strategy games. The company is working to prevent future missteps by sticking to what it does best.
