After a short break to mend the tires damaged by Sony's legal team, the PS1-style racer game formerly known as Bloodborne Kart is back with a new identity and launch date. Despite the removal of all direct references to FromSoftware’s 2015 action RPG, the game still retains its core essence, proving that even without the "Bloodborne" in the title, the game's unique flavor remains intact.

The Transformation of Bloodborne Kart to Nightmare Kart
Indie developer Lilith Walther announced on April 2 that Bloodborne Kart has been renamed to Nightmare Kart. The game is set to launch on May 31 for free on Itch.io and Steam with 20 racers, 16 maps, a full campaign mode with boss fights, and a versus battle mode. The announcement included a video showcasing the game’s hunter, who maintains the trademark Bloodborne hunter look, albeit with minor changes such as bandages replacing the Hunter Set’s scarf. "It's legally distinct," said Walther.
The Journey of Nightmare Kart
Beginning as an April Fools’ Day joke in 2021, Nightmare Kart evolved into a full-fledged project in 2022. Formerly known as Bloodborne Kart, this PS1-style kart race game blends the aesthetic of FromSoft’s Gothic Souls game with the design elements of games like Mario Kart, creating a unique gaming experience. Although the game visually resembled Bloodborne, its mechanics were different. Sony, however, insisted on the removal of its branding and change of characters, a move that was both anticipated and gave Walther full creative control over the now-renamed Nightmare Kart.
Despite the challenges, Walther managed to incorporate the new changes on top of the existing game, similar to how a mod would do it. She expressed her continuous fear of receiving a full cease-and-desist letter from Sony while working on Nightmare Kart. Yet, she also acknowledged that Sony allowing her to release the game, even in its altered state, was quite unprecedented. She hopes to release a "full complete version" in the future, given that the initial release gains enough traction.
The Name Selection Process
Walther received countless suggestions for the new game title. Her personal favorite was 'Bleed for Speed,' but she wanted a title that maintained the same rhythm as the original name. This was to ensure that the game would still be recognizable as the game formerly known as 'Bloodborne Kart.'
