Space Marine 2 offers three-player co-op missions in the Operations mode. These missions are part of the game's campaign but involve different characters on side missions.

In Operations mode, your squad must consist of one Space Marine from each class. This means you can't have a team of just snipers, for example.

This design choice aims to encourage "strategic variety."

The Class Selection Dilemma

Problems arise when players try to form a group. In the game, there's a HUB where players gather before starting a mission. The countdown begins only when all three players have chosen different classes.

This can lead to awkward situations where two or more players want to be the same class. Everyone waits for someone else to switch classes first.

The issue is made worse by the class-leveling system in Space Marine 2. Experience gained during a mission isn't shared between classes. Leveling up is slow, so if you like one class, there's little incentive to switch.

Thankfully, the developers at Saber Interactive seem to have a solution in mind. One fan suggested a system that automatically matches you with players of different classes.

Despite these issues, Space Marine 2 has had a massive early access launch. Its global release is today, September 9th.
