Blizzard Still Eyeing a StarCraft Shooter Revival
Blizzard is reportedly keeping the dream of a StarCraft shooter alive. Despite several previous attempts that were shelved, the company seems determined to bring this project to life. This time, Far Cry 5 director Dan Hay is at the helm, which has sparked renewed excitement among fans.
Blizzard's Persistent Dream
While the possibility of StarCraft III remains distant, Blizzard hasn't given up on the StarCraft universe. According to a recent interview with Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, the company is working on a new StarCraft shooter. Schreier's upcoming book, "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," mentions this exciting project.
Previous Attempts
Blizzard has tried to create a StarCraft shooter before. Here are some notable attempts:
- StarCraft Ghost: Announced in 2002, this third-person shooter focused on a Terran psychic espionage operative. It was indefinitely delayed and eventually canceled.
- Project Ares: A first-person shooter similar to Battlefield, set in the StarCraft universe. It was canned in 2019 to focus on Diablo IV and Overwatch 2.
These projects never saw the light of day, but they show Blizzard's persistent interest in expanding the StarCraft universe.
New Leadership, New Hope
Dan Hay, who joined Blizzard in 2022, was previously leading the survival crafting game project Odyssey. Although Odyssey was canceled, Hay's leadership brings hope for the new StarCraft shooter. With Blizzard now part of Xbox, there's optimism that this project might succeed where others failed.

A successful StarCraft shooter could scratch a similar itch to Saber Interactive's Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. If it performs well, it might even bring us closer to the long-awaited StarCraft III.
