Stunning Final Fantasy Cards Debut in Magic: The Gathering
Magic: The Gathering is teaming up with Final Fantasy for an epic crossover, and fans couldn’t be more excited. The new card set, launching in June, features four pre-constructed decks led by iconic characters: Terra from FFVI, Cloud from FFVII, Tidus from FFX, and Y’shtola from FFXIV. These commander-style decks are themed around their respective games, with stunning artwork and unique abilities that bring the Final Fantasy universe to life. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, this collaboration is a must-see.
Meet the Commanders
The four commanders are the heart of this crossover. Terra, a red, white, and black wizard, revives creatures from the graveyard, reflecting the story of Final Fantasy VI. Cloud, a red, green, and white soldier, focuses on equipment and treasure tokens, tying into the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Tidus, a green, white, and blue warrior, excels at drawing cards and proliferating counters, while Y’shtola, a white, blue, and black warlock, deals extra damage and heals with non-creature spells. Each deck captures the essence of its game, making them a treat for fans.
Designing the Decks
Creating these decks was no small feat. The team aimed to blend the Final Fantasy narrative with Magic: The Gathering’s gameplay mechanics. Senior game designer Daniel Holt shared that while Cloud was an obvious choice, characters like Celes and Yuna were also considered for their respective decks.
Art design was another challenge. With references ranging from Yoshitaka Amano’s original illustrations to modern remakes, the team focused on consistent features to ensure each character felt authentic. The result? Stunning cards that honor the legacy of Final Fantasy.
Release Details
The decks will be available on June 13. Standard decks are priced at $70, while the collector’s edition, featuring surge foil treatment, will cost $150. The set’s symbol? A chocobo, of course. If the Commander cards are any indication, this crossover is set to be a visual and gameplay masterpiece.
