Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Online Services Ending

It's official. The online play for both the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U is set to be switched off on April 8 at 7 P.M. ET. Post this, your devices will be isolated, disconnected from the global sphere, until the solitude begins to sink in.

Upcoming Updates

Keep an eye out for the big free update for Mario Striker coming on July 22, 2022, and the return to Hyrule in The Week In Games on May 8, 2023.

The Journey of 3DS and Wii U

The handheld 3DS was first launched in 2011, followed by the Wii U in 2012. Both devices came with a host of online functions that were selling points at the time. However, this April, Nintendo will be switching off the ONLINE lever, marking the end of an era.

What This Means for Gaming

While it may not seem impactful to many, this decision is another blow to the preservation of gaming history. It's another console losing its online capabilities, and yes, this means SpotPass is no more.

The Economic Perspective

From an economic standpoint, it doesn't make sense for Nintendo to maintain services that only a small fraction of people use. However, there are fans who would gladly take on the role of maintaining these services.

Offline Functionality and Updates

All offline functionality should continue as normal. Nintendo has no current plans to stop allowing players to download owned software or update data. The latter is maintained so that Nintendo can continue to roll out updates that prevent the use of flashcarts.

Exceptions for 3DS

Two 3DS exceptions will continue to operate. The Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter will remain functional, allowing you to store and transport your pocket monsters from 3DS Pokémon games.
