Upon completing the epilogue of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, it’s fair to say the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC was a bit of a letdown. The “Mochi Mayhem” episode, while an hour of lighthearted fun with some of the best characters in the Paldea region, was just that—fun, but lacking the depth of the games’ more memorable moments.

“Mochi Mayhem” and The Teal Mask
“Mochi Mayhem” serves as an epilogue to the DLC, focusing on characters and locations introduced in The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. It also creates room for old friends. Rival Kieran, having been humbled by his losses in the DLC, invites the player and their Paldean friends to the small region of Kitakami. Here, a strange curse has the locals performing what’s akin to The Chicken Dance and declaring their love for Mochi. Despite its humor, the storyline manages to maintain a balanced tone of ridiculous and unsettling.
High-Level Battles Against Old Friends

These events set the stage for the games to facilitate high-level battles against old friends. Characters like Nemona, Arven, and Penny from the base game play a significant role in the story. As more powerful trainers succumb to the curse, you’ll have to battle them to save yourself. Even for a level 100 team, these battles pose a challenge.
The Main Trio’s Last Adventure
The storyline culminates in the capture of a rather unremarkable Mythical Pokémon. However, it does offer some closure to The Teal Mask’s story and, more importantly, allows for one more adventure with the main trio. The dynamic between the cast of Scarlet and Violet was underutilized in the main game. When the crew finally comes together in the finale, it’s a special moment to see these three contrasting personalities clash and then find common ground. These games don’t get enough credit for their writing and localization. They’re funny, heartfelt, and offer some of the most compelling worldbuilding Pokémon has ever had.
The Glimpse into a Party-Centric Pokémon Game

Unfortunately, “Mochi Mayhem” doesn’t quite hit the mark. Still, the epilogue of Scarlet and Violet does provide another glimpse into a party-centric Pokémon game, reminding us of the potential these games have.
