Yakuza series stays true to roots despite new audience
Welcome to Streamers Visuals! Today, we're diving into the latest news from the world of Yakuza/Like a Dragon.
Yakuza/Like a Dragon: Staying True to Its Roots
The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series has never shied away from its unique storytelling.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind these games, is committed to keeping the focus on middle-aged men doing "middle-aged men things."
Not Changing for a New Audience
Ryosuke Horii, the series director, expressed gratitude for the growing interest from new players, including many women.
However, he confirmed that the studio won't change its approach to cater to this new audience.
"We are happy and grateful for the increase in new players, especially women," Horii said.
"But we have no intention of making calculated changes to conform to this new audience."
Relatable Characters
Horii believes that the authenticity and age of the characters are the series' strengths.
In Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the story starts with three unemployed middle-aged men.
Their human and relatable nature makes the game unique.
- Kiryu Kazuma: Main character in the first six games
- Ichiban Kasuga: Takes over from Yakuza 7
- Real-life issues: Characters face universal problems
Universal Themes
Horii emphasized that the characters' problems are universal, making it easy for players to immerse themselves in the game.
"Our characters are flesh and blood, just like our players," Horii said.
Hirotka Chiba, responsible for planning, gave an example of relatable themes.
"Adachi wonders if he should drink beer because of his uric acid levels," Chiba said.
Such themes resonate more with middle-aged players than younger ones.
What's Next for Yakuza/Like a Dragon?
The next game in the series is set to release on September 20.
Fans should not expect a significant shift in direction.
Sega has also filed a trademark for a game called "Yakuza Wars."
Details are scarce, but RGG Studio promises that fans will be "surprised" by the announcement.
