Dead Space Sequel? EA Has Other Plans

Last year's remake of Dead Space was a hit, bringing back the beloved space horror series after a decade-long hiatus. Despite being January 2023's second biggest selling game, it seems Electronic Arts (EA) isn't keen on continuing the series. Reports surfaced that a remake of Dead Space 2 was shelved, and EA denied any plans for it. Recently, the original creators' pitch for Dead Space 4 was rejected by EA, leaving fans wondering about the future of the franchise.

The Pitch That Never Took Off

In a recent interview, Glen Schofield, Christopher Stone, and Bret Robbins, members of the original Dead Space team, revealed their attempt to pitch Dead Space 4 to EA. Unfortunately, EA showed no interest in reviving the series. The trio expressed disappointment, acknowledging EA's decision based on their sales expectations.

The Challenges of AAA Games

As AAA game budgets soar, meeting sales expectations becomes increasingly challenging. Dead Space, despite its past popularity, didn't meet EA's standards with its remake. This has led to a halt in any further remakes by EA Motive.

Industry Hesitations

Christopher Stone noted the industry's current reluctance to take risks. Despite this, both Stone and Schofield remain eager to create Dead Space 4, brimming with new ideas for the series.

Other Ventures and Setbacks

Bret Robbins, who remained quiet during the pitch discussion, has been busy with his development studio, Ascendant Studios. The studio faced challenges with the release of Immortals of Aveum, leading to layoffs and a merger with Dan Houser's Absurd Ventures.

Glen Schofield, after co-founding Sledgehammer Games and working on Call of Duty titles, formed Striking Distance in 2019. However, their game, The Callisto Protocol, also failed to meet sales expectations, and Schofield has been working freelance since.

Christopher Stone joined VOID Interactive, working on new projects after their release of Ready or Not.

The Future of Dead Space

For now, Dead Space seems to be living up to its name, with no new games on the horizon. Unless fans take it upon themselves to create demakes, it might be a while before we see another entry in the franchise.
