Tesla Recalls Nearly Two Million Electric Cars

Major electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla, is recalling and updating nearly all of its two million electric cars sold in the United States. This action is set to place additional restrictions on the included self-driving assistance mode, known as Autosteer.

Investigations have indicated that Autosteer can be potentially dangerous, having been implicated in numerous accidents and fatalities.

Tesla's Response to Autosteer Concerns

The massive recall was brought to light in a formal communication to Tesla, dated December 12, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The letter revealed that Tesla's systems, designed to keep drivers engaged and alert on the road when using Autosteer, were "not sufficient to prevent driver misuse".

To address this issue, Tesla has been ordered to release a software update that will more frequently monitor whether a driver using Autosteer is actually paying attention. If the vehicle enters a situation that requires human intervention, or if it determines the driver isn't focused, the car will deactivate Autosteer and return control to the driver.

Previous Concerns and Accidents

This recall follows a years-long investigation by the NHTSA that found several accidents caused by the controversial autopilot mode, some of which resulted in fatalities. The investigation will continue as the agency monitors whether Tesla's update improves the situation and reduces Autosteer-related accidents, injuries, and deaths.

This is the second large recall of Tesla vehicles and their autopilot modes in 2023. Earlier in the year, 362,000 cars were recalled and updated due to similar issues involving Tesla’s self-driving mode.

Elon Musk's Response to the Situation

On the day the letter was sent, Tesla and Twitter owner Elon Musk was seen posting meme images that would have been dismissed as outdated even by 2019 standards. Prior to this, he was seen encouraging users to follow controversial figure Alex Jones after reactivating Jones’ long-suspended account.
