Stardew Valley's 1.6 Update: A Surprise in Every Corner

The latest update for the much-loved game Stardew Valley is finally here. This update, version 1.6, is even more significant than what we initially anticipated.

Game developer Eric Barone, also known as ConcernedApe, has been rather secretive about the new features this update would bring. He teased about a festival and some new dialogue, but he didn't reveal much else.

What's New in the Update?

In the days leading up to the release, the developer shared a few spoiler-free extracts from the patch notes. These technical changes were greeted with much enthusiasm from the Stardew community. However, these were merely the tip of the iceberg.

Now that the update is here, the full patch notes have been released. And there's a lot to unpack.

The Surprises in the 1.6 Update

Initially, ConcernedApe hinted at a single "major" festival being added in the 1.6 update. However, the update brought not just one, but three new festivals. In addition to the Desert Festival, players can now also participate in the Trout Derby and the SquidFest. Moreover, there are also additional environmental events in the summer.

The developer also teased a few smaller mechanical changes and bug fixes throughout the week. But the biggest surprise was the announcement of a significant new feature: the meadowlands farm type with "chewy blue grass." This beginner-friendly farm type starts players with a coop and two chickens. There's also a new "mastery system" that is accessed by an entirely new area.

Pets Get an Upgrade Too

One of the updates revealed that players would be able to phase through their pets much quicker in 1.6. But that's not the only new feature for pets. Players can now have multiple pets, including turtle pets and new breeds of cats and dogs. Pets can now also give gifts back to their owners. And players can put hats on their cats and dogs.

New Dialogue

One of the promises made about 1.6 was that it would feature new dialogue. And it does. A lot of it. NPCs now have custom gift reactions, dynamic dialogue in reaction to things around them, custom dialogue when accepting the flower dance, and some missing dialogue has been restored.

Other Major Changes

• PC lobbies can now support up to eight players and stability has been improved across the board.
• The world map will now show your exact position.
