Super Mario Bros. Wonder: A Glimpse into the Game’s Unique Features
The release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is imminent. However, the game will not feature live commentary, a feature that was originally intended.
The Scrapped Feature
The developers dedicated six months to creating a live commentary feature, which would have been a first for Mario games. This exciting feature was supposed to provide a guide through the gameplay.
Developer Insights
In a recent edition of Nintendo’s web series, Ask the Developer, the team shared their thoughts on the scrapped feature.
The Intended Purpose
The developers believed that the live commentary feature would have brought a new element to the game, making it feel fresh for the long-time players.
The Voice of Commentary
However, the team was divided over what kind of voice should be used for the commentary. The default option was a generic, newscaster-like voice, but players had the option to switch to a Tsundere commentary.
What is Tsundere?
Shiro Mouri, one of the developers, explained that Tsundere is a Japanese term used to describe a personality that is initially cold and harsh but eventually shows a glimpse of affection.
Player Preference
Interestingly, during playtests, many players preferred switching to the Tsundere commentary.
The Fate of the Feature
Despite the potential, the live commentary feature was ultimately scrapped. The developers found it challenging to implement. However, elements of the feature were incorporated into the game’s Talking Flowers characters, who interact with Mario and his crew as they journey through the game.
Reimagining the Feature
Koichi Hayashida, another developer, said that the Talking Flowers make sure the players never feel lonely in the game. Their timely comments add to the overall gaming experience.
A Bullet Dodged?
Some argue that the game is better off without the live commentary feature. In games like God of War Ragnarok, similar features have been found to be more annoying than helpful. Imagine a Tsundere Princess Daisy yelling at you every time you miss a jump!
Release Date
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to release on October 20 on the Nintendo Switch.
