Blizzard's World of Warcraft Classic Introduces Cataclysm

In 2019, the gaming giant Blizzard launched a nostalgic version of its popular MMO - World of Warcraft Classic. This version of the game co-exists with the modern version, providing players with a unique opportunity to revisit the original World of Warcraft experience.

Starting with the original 1.0 version, Classic has since incorporated several of the game’s subsequent expansions. Now, Blizzard is set to add Cataclysm, the expansion that initially inspired the creation of WoW Classic.

Upcoming Additions to WoW Classic

On May 20, Classic players will have the chance to dive into Cataclysm with the release of the expansion’s pre-patch. This patch will introduce the Goblin and Worgen races, along with changes to Azeroth’s landscape.

Upon the full expansion's release, seven new zones, nine dungeons, three raid dungeons, and Darkmoon Island will be added to the game. Blizzard has also shared a roadmap for post-expansion updates, including the release of 'Rise of the Zandalari' in July 2024, 'Rage of the Firelands' in October 2024, and 'Hour of Twilight' in January 2025.

Impact of Cataclysm on World of Warcraft

The original release of the Cataclysm expansion in 2010 resulted in a significant shift in the MMO. The arrival of the dragon Deathwing altered Azeroth's landscape and the gameplay of WoW. Changes included the Barrens being split in half and areas such as Thousand Needles and part of Darkshore’s coast being submerged or washed away by water.

Many players longed for a way to return to the pre-Cataclysm version of Azeroth. That’s precisely what WoW Classic has provided since its release. However, the addition of Cataclysm to Classic can no longer be overlooked.

Future of WoW Classic

With the introduction of Cataclysm, the main Classic servers will move on from the previous expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. While Blizzard has not made any official comments, it is anticipated that Wrath of the Lich King will become unavailable to play, similar to The Burning Crusade when Classic servers moved to Wrath of the Lich King.

Players who wish to relive the MMO experience before Cataclysm will still have the option to do so on original Classic servers. However, this will only be the base version of the game. Players hoping to revisit The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King will likely have to wait for the release of WoW Classic Classic.
