In the world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, there's an NPC in the opening town of Kalm that has stirred my curiosity. This woman, despite her seemingly ordinary existence, has left an indelible mark on my gaming experience.

She isn't a weapon merchant. She doesn't offer side quests. You can't engage her in Queen's Blood, the popular minigame. Her role is solely to sell chocobo ice cream, and this simple task has made me question the anatomy of the franchise's iconic chocobos.

Chocobo Ice Cream: A Peculiar Delicacy

The first two lines she repeats are, "Cool off with some chocobo ice cream! Our ice cream is made with fresh milk straight from the local farms!" If you're not familiar with chocobos, they're large, often yellow, bird-like creatures used for transportation in the Final Fantasy universe. Birds, as we know, don't produce milk. So, what's the deal?

Chocobos and The Mystery of Milk

Milk is produced through lactation, a process exclusive to mammals. To quote an iconic line from the 2000 comedy Meet the Parents, "you can milk anything with nipples." Following this logic, chocobos would need to be mammals to produce milk. As far as I'm aware, this hasn't been established in Final Fantasy lore.

Chocobos: Birds or Mammals?

Birds, being non-mammalian, can't produce milk. This led me to believe that chocobos, being birds, wouldn't be able to produce milk. Besides, there's another stall selling moogle buns in Kalm, a pastry filled with cream. The ice cream stall isn't chocobo-themed, it's just an ice cream stall. However, we do have confirmation that cows exist in the Grasslands, so we can't rule out the possibility of chocobo milk.

A Possible Explanation?

There could be an explanation that allows for the existence of chocobo ice cream while maintaining their bird status. Some birds like pigeons, doves, and flamingos, as well as male emperor penguins, can produce a milk-like substance called crop milk. Crop milk contains fat and protein similar to mammalian milk.

So, could this be the secret behind the chocobo ice cream? We can only speculate.
