Dragon Age Fans Worry About Limited Choices in Veilguard

Dragon Age fans are buzzing with excitement and concern as BioWare recently revealed details about the choices that will carry over to the upcoming game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Known for its rich storytelling and impactful decisions, the Dragon Age series has always allowed players to shape their own unique narratives. However, in this fourth installment, only three decisions from previous games will carry over, causing quite a stir in the community.

What Choices Will Carry Over?

In The Veilguard, players will import three key decisions during the character creation phase. These decisions include:

  • Who did the Inquisitor romance?
  • Did they disband or maintain the titular organization?
  • Are they still friends with Solas?

These choices will significantly impact how characters react to events in the game. Given the deep history between the Inquisitor and Solas, fans are eager to see how these relationships unfold.

Why Only Three Choices?

John Epler, the creative director of The Veilguard, explained that the limited number of imported choices is due to the game's setting. The Veilguard takes place in northern Thedas, far from the locations of previous games. This geographical shift means that some past decisions might not be relevant to the new storyline.

This approach has worked before, as seen in Mass Effect: Andromeda, which was set in a different galaxy from its predecessors. However, fans are still concerned about how this will affect returning characters like the Inquisitor and Morrigan.

The Inquisitor and Morrigan

The Inquisitor and Morrigan, key figures from previous games, will return in The Veilguard. One of the most significant decisions in Dragon Age: Inquisition involved the Well of Sorrows, which tied either the Inquisitor or Morrigan to the elven goddess Mythal. Fans worry that without the ability to import this decision, its impact might be lost.

Additionally, Morrigan's potential son, conceived through a ritual in Origins, adds another layer of complexity. The absence of choices pertaining to her has taken many by surprise.

Fan Reactions

Reactions among fans are mixed. Some are concerned that the limited choices will diminish the depth and continuity of the story. Others believe that focusing on new relationships and choices with the new protagonist, Rook, is a positive direction.

Many are adopting a wait-and-see approach, hoping that once the game is released, these decisions will make more sense in context. Epler mentioned that the team aimed to select choices that would have significant ramifications, rather than just cameos or altered dialogue.

Looking Forward

Despite the concerns, what I've played of The Veilguard felt like it had strong connections to previous games, even without explicitly referencing all past choices. The true test will come when Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches on October 31.
